How To Create A Pareto Chart in Google Data Studio

Here’s a quick tip on how to create a Pareto chart in Google Data Studio. This uses Google Analytics dataset for the example. In theory, the Pareto chart looks better when you have fewer unique values in the dimension field [Having Blog Post Title would crowd the X axis and make it hard to read stuff].

Ok, let’s go.

First, Select the Combo chart from Chart types

Drop your dimension [Continent] and the metric [Sessions, twice], make sure you’ve sorted it by Sessions [DESC order]

It should look like this

It should look like this

Click on the second Sessions metric and choose Comparison Metric > Percentage of Total > Relative To Corresponding Data. The last option doesn’t make a difference, it only does when you have a comparison date period. https://support.google.com/datastudio/answer/9372465?hl=en

It should now look like this

You can now go into Style tab and move the second Sessions to the right axis and choose Cumulative + data labels. Adding data labels for primary Y axis, you should see this.
